How can I tell a mortgage “lender” from a mortgage “broker”?

Well the easiest way is to ask. They will usually brag about how the “fund their own loans” or have “in-house underwriting” in their ads, so that is another easy way to tell. Also remember that any depositor bank, like Wells Fargo, or the bank down on the corner will be a “lender” rather than a broker.
