Chase Manhattan Mortgage Review
As a mortgage broker for over 15 years, how could we not come across the biggest name in banking. However, we heard a lot about them from other brokers who pushed the Chase home equity mortgage programs. This was one of their most aggressively marketed programs. I didn’t like their promoting the 100% CLTV home equity programs, so we stayed as far away from them as possible.
Any retail mortgage seller that services their own loans with this many consumer complaints should be avoided.

When the program at Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth Texas was winding down and people were being laid off, my husband decided to look for work at another company. Unfortunately for us he found work in Wichita, KS as a contract engineer. Because of my medical bills, buying car and recently moving into our home, we did not have savings. With him moving to a new city and state, he had to rent somewhere to live and incur his daily living expenses. We also had to pay all our current bills. We were in huge trouble. Friends, family and TV told us to call our mortgage company and explain the situation to see if they could help. I called Chase and explained the situation. I was told not to worry, they would give us a three month reprieve from our payments. They would be sending paperwork for us to fill out that we would have to send back. (We received the paperwork, filled it out and sent it back.) I called to verify they received the paper work and was told everything was good. The next payment we would make would be at the beginning of June. We thought everything was done.
During this time (April 08) our home suffered hail damage and we received a check from our insurance company in the amount of $11,363, the amount our insurance approved to fix the damage. We sent the check to Chase as they instructed us to do. That is the last time we heard or saw the money. (The roof, siding and gutters have never been fixed and the money never returned to the insurance company.)
At the end of May we tried to log in to our online account and were denied access. A phone call told us they were having system problems. We wrote a check and mailed in our payment. Three day later we received a letter from a law firm stating that we were in default. I called Chase only to be told that they could no longer talk to us and that I would need to talk to the law firm.
I contacted the law firm and asked what we needed to do. He stated we had to pay off the owed amount but would not give the amount owed to me over the phone or e-mail. He would send a letter out with the new amount. After two weeks I had not received anything. I called and was told they would send it out. I received the letter the two days before the amount owed was due. I called him and said we could not get it together in that amount of time. He said that was fine and would recalculate it and mail it out. Once again I didn’t receive the letter and had to call. I also asked him about the money from the insurance. He said he would check on it.
In mid July I had not received the pay off so I mailed a cashier’s check for $8,000 to the law office to show good faith because they never could give me a number in time. We finally got things worked out the last week of August. The only problem was I had a check that my bank held for three days. I was not going to be able to get them the full amount in time. I notified the law office and was told not to worry but we would owe a new amount. When I called after Labor Day weekend to get the amount I was told our home was sold.
Chase didn’t want to talk to us about the insurance money or the problems with their representation. In Texas they can foreclose on your home without appearing before a judge. If we would have, we would still have our home. We are people who have money in the bank, investments and my husband has a great job. We did everything we thought we should, except get a lawyer to help us.
CHASE is the worst company ever!!!! We are currently going through a foreclosure. I had to try and sell my house because of moving closer to work. When the house wouldn’t sell we tried to do a short sell.(Chase told us to do that) 3 weeks to foreclosure chase called and said we couldn’t do a short sell because we could afford to live there. Whenever we would call to get any kind of information they would put you on hold forever and transfer you to people that didnt know their a$$ from a hole in the ground!! So we have been trying deed in lieu.(chase told us to do that as well) we couldnt get any information out of anyone. we tried this for 4 or 5 months. Chase calls the day before our house is being auctioned on the courthouse steps to tell us that deed in lieu has been denied. This experience with chase has left a bad taste in our mouths and we will NEVER deal with them for anything again!!!! My advice is to stay clear of them!!
I also have a V.A. Loan. I have been told so many lies from chase i can’t take it anymore. I have done V.A. Streamline loans in the past, a matter of fact i done one w\chase in June of 2008 w\a rate of 5% over 15yrs, because they didn’t offer it at 5% over 30yrs at that time. When i did that loan in June and the one i did five years ago, no credit check was required on V.A. Streamline loans. Now one year later V.A. Says the bank can require you to have a 640 credit score, but with chase they told me i had to have a 660 credit score humm!!! Then they turn around and tell me they could give me a normal re-finance loan w\a 620 credit score, but i would have to get cash back humm!! Once again. To top that off they told me i would need a appraisal at $425.00 and that V.A. Controlled who did the appraisal which is true. But the money amount that they wanted to charge me was incorrect for the state i live in. It was suppose to be $350.00 humm!!! Once again. Now when i when into the bank this June and requested a home equity loan in which i was turned down. The reason was some more bull-s, they told me on the phone they had done an appraisal in 2008 and that my house was worth 73,500.00 and i told them that was false, so i told them to send me the appraisal. Now this was the reason i was told on the phone. Come to find out that were using the appraisal from when i bought the house in 1998. When i just recently confronted them about it on the phone someone else told me oh no we took what you told us what your house was worth, humm!! Once again. All I can say if your looking for honesty and good customer service, chase is not the one!
Chase has not applied numerous payments to our account, even though the banks that they are written though provides them with proof that they were indeed cashed by chase and should be applied. I have been dealing with 2 missing payments for 8 months now. Recently I noticed that they have removed $7,700 from my account showing as a negative in my escrow. My taxes have already been paid, and are not due again until Sept. There is no valid reason for them to remove this money from my account, and no body can tell me why it was taken out. I get transferred from person to person on the phone, because no one there has a clue to what their job is. They give me the names of people I need to talk to, but I can never get a hold of that person. They are theives. Even several lawyers I have spoken to say to Stay away from Cahe, or ANY of the big banks. They basically feel as if they can do what they want, and the government allows them to do so… and gives them money!!!! Give that same amount of money to the people whoms homes they are trying to steal, and that would resolve our housing problem… not to bigger bonuses for the banking execs….Screw Obamas plans, he’s in bed with them!
Joyce,
I fear you are right…good luck.
We were victims of the Hurricanes of 2004 in Florida. We had Chase Manhattan who misled us every time we called. The house was destroyed and the insurance company did not want to cooperate. I contacted them so we could get them to back us. They just wanted the small check that the insurance issued us, but would not help us. Their solution, “well, we could just start foreclosure proceedings!” We were not even behind on our payments, that’s the kicker. When we had no other alternative, we sold the house. Chase Manhattan kept our insurance money until 45 days after the house was closed on. They also reported us late on our last payment when I was told not to pay it due to the closing at the first of the month! We received our money via wire transfer the exact day of closing and were given a receipt where the mortgage was paid off at Chase before we left the closing. I would not suggest anyone using them for a mortgage. They are the worst in the world. Run quickly away from them.
We had a VA mortgage through Chase and sold it through a short sale in 2007. They never closed my account properly and reported me 6 months behind on my mortgage after we sold it. It took me almost a year for them to fix it. They finally did and we are trying to get another house and they reported us 30 days late on a closed account. Don’t go through Chase. Everytime you call to talk to someone they lie to you and transfer you somewhere else. Hopefully I can get it fixed sometime soon.
I have had to call four times just to be given a different telephone which prompts me to hang up !!
