Divorce Property Division – Deciding Who Keeps The House
Divorce property division can be one of the hardest things about your divorce. Divorce property decisions are additionally clouded by the anger, hurt, and resentment you feel at one of the lowest times in your life. Dividing up the marital property in a divorce seems so cold and heartless even without these emotions mixed in.
And trust me, it’s alright to feel those things but you can’t let them make decisions for you especially about your home and your mortgage. You can afford to be petty when it comes to your CD collection but not your home.
The one thing people have to realize in divorce property division is you are only hurting yourself if you let emotion take over decisions your head should be making. You need to weigh each decision you make in divorce property division carefully.
The home seems to be the most visible in a divorce. We all worry about what the neighbors are thinking of us. The neighbors don’t know who got the CD collection but they can see if your house is up for sale and who moved out.
The house becomes the one thing in the divorce you cling to. Not because it is the right thing to do but because you don’t want things to change.
You may stay in a home you can’t afford just because you don’t want the embarrassment of moving. You may convince your soon to be ex to give you money for the house payment that is not included in the divorce separation agreement. You may use your soon to be ex’s income to qualify for a new mortgage. You may buy a new house you can’t afford to make sure everyone knows you’re fine.
All of these are huge mistakes.
A divorce is painful enough. So don’t add to it by setting yourself up for more pain after the divorce because you made a mistake with your home in the division of divorce property.
I am divorced myself and have done many loans for divorced and divorcing people. I have seen the disappointment and despair when you find out that one mistake cost you your home.
I wish someone would have taught me (and all my clients I couldn’t help) how to divorce as a homeowner. That is why I am offering my divorce support to you.
I wrote a book called Home Custody™. If you are thinking of divorce and have a home or plan to buy one, get a copy of my book. Whether you plan to sell your home in the divorce or want to stay, this book shows you step-by-step how to navigate your way through the divorce property stage.
Hang in There!
